Unleash the Power: Therapeutic Horticulture as Community Development

The Grassroots Institute's inaugural two day course is now accepting expressions of interest from social and community development workers. This participant tailored course is designed to lay the essential foundations that will enable attendees to use therapeutic horticulture and community agriculture (TH/CA) in community development settings. 


The course will be facilitated by a qualified social worker with a community development background and qualified horticulturalist. 


1. WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?


This 80% fee reduced course is aimed at social and community workers. You may be working within the community, recently finished studying, or thinking of starting a TH/CA programme in your organisation. This course will give you the essential skills and knowledge to implement a TH/CA initiative.



2. LEARNING OUTCOMES


The specific learning outcomes will be tailored via the feedback, requirements and contexts of each participant. Broadly the course will provide participants with:


  • A grounding in the principles behind, and the evidence base of this way of working,


  • TH/CA programme planning, assessment and design skills,


  • Techniques and case studies exploring the applications of this practice,


  • Essential horticultural knowledge.



3. REQUIREMENTS OF PARTICIPANTS


Potential participants for this initial fee reduced course need to be trained in, or currently working within the social and community work fields. 


Course attendees will be required to participate in an initial survey so that The Grassroots Institute (TGI) can tailor the course to the needs and expectations of attendees. 


To assist in continuous course improvement attendees are also asked to provide feedback at the conclusion of the course.



4. WHERE & WHEN IS THE COURSE?


This course will take place in Sydney NSW over two days on Saturday March 21st and Sunday March 22nd 2020.


Day 1: The first day of the course will consist of a face-to-face workshop.


Day 2: The second day of the course will involve a site visit to further explore topics discussed on day one and to learn practical hands on horticultural skills for use in TH/CA initiatives.


A programme outlining the specific course structure will be sent to participants following consultation with attendees and will be sent out closer to the course start date.



5. COURSE FEE 


This inaugural course by The Grassroots Institute is available to social and community workers at an 80% reduced fee. 


The total cost for the two day workshop including refreshments is $30.00. 


This price does not include transport to the site visit on day two, which can be accessed by public transport or private vehicle.
